Happy Father's Day

He's sleeping. Came home yesterday at 1:30ish while the boys were napping. JP was sleepy when he first saw him, but after a minute of mommy he got into his Daddy's arms. When Seth woke up a bit later, He went in to get him. Seth laughed and he smiled, but its funny how time doensn't really affect them. It was like he had just seen him yesterday.

And so, my boys have their daddy back today. And later today I get to go see my dad. Cookout. Cold brews. Sisters.

My father has knee problems right now. So he can't do as much as he is used to. Yardwork is particularly tough. It's so strange doing stuff for him. His acre yard is meticuluosly groomed, and everything is done in a very specific manner. Nothing just done to get it done. It's an artform really. And his daughters and grandson are trying desperately to find ways to help without making it seem like we're trying desperately to help. If its frustrating to us, I can't imagine how hard it is for him.

My father is the Helper. He paints rooms for us, he helps with our yards, rototilling, gardening, babysitting, whatever. And here we are, stumbling around this yard and trying to plant, weed, spread mulch like a bunch of amateurs right?

How do you help the Helper? How do you try to hide the fact that while you are inept, you can indeed Help? How do daughters do what Dad's do without him feeling, well, helpless? He isn't, but I imagine that's part of the feeling and the reasons behind his reticence. He doesn't want our help. He wants to Do.

How do you try to give back after over 30 years of giving? You can't I suppose. But you can at least try to Help the Helper. Even when He doesn't want it.

Dad, if you read this....

We love you. For the love of God, let us do a little what you have done so gracefully for decades?

Happy Fathers Day.
