Lost

Okay, so here's my take on Lost:

Its essentially a very modern re-telling of Milton's Paradise Lost.  You had to read it in high school and unless you were a budding English major, you probably read the Cliff Note's and then promptly forgot about it.  I did too.  And so, here is an excerpt from SparkNotes.com:

"M ilton’s speaker begins Paradise Lost by stating that his subject will be Adam and Eve’s disobedience and fall from grace. He invokes a heavenly muse and asks for help in relating his ambitious story and God’s plan for humankind. The action begins with Satan and his fellow rebel angels who are found chained to a lake of fire in Hell. They quickly free themselves and fly to land, where they discover minerals and construct Pandemonium, which will be their meeting place. Inside Pandemonium, the rebel angels, who are now devils, debate whether they should begin another war with God. Beezelbub suggests that they attempt to corrupt God’s beloved new creation, humankind. Satan agrees, and volunteers to go himself. As he prepares to leave Hell, he is met at the gates by his children, Sin and Death, who follow him and build a bridge between Hell and Earth."

Adam and Eve's disobedience?  Hmmm... I think that might be Jacob and his brother?  Or perhaps a generation before them?  He (Jacob) has Richard, the most faithful follower who gets to live forever as a reward (or curse?) to help tell his story and ensure the island's safety.  As for Satan and the rebels, well we have the Others don't we?  And certainly poor Desmond knows all about being chained to a lake of fire:  how long did he hang around pushing that button for again?  Or is Desmond another example of what faith is?  Blindly doing what one is told based on fear of the unknown?  Or, another version of faith:  following direction because you truly believe it will lead you to a better place?

Oh yes, this fits.  And all along the seasons we have seen snippets of spirituality and faith and belief and the battle of good over evil.  The balanced scale of light and dark in perfect harmony... this is battle isn't it?  Of the good guy fighting as long as he can to protect the world from chaos.  The gate and the bridge are the island, indeed the gateway to hell but also the middle ground between heaven and hell.  The other world, the hedge that rides between the world of the living and the dead.  And so, in this otherworld... we have to ask:

If this is the Otherworld, then does that make the Sideways World the Real World?

Hmmm.....
