And so begins....
The academic year wrap-up. Budgets. Files. Cleaning. And my most favoritest thing.... spending down the budget!!
Seriously though, working on a college campus and returning that schedule is quite comforting. It makes the time go by so much faster when there is an "end" and a new "beginning" every year. The build-up, the crazy time where you don't have enough hours to get everything done, the end of each semester bringing about its own changes and the celebrations that congratulate our students on jobs well done... all makes up for a changeable, yet predictable sort of crazy.
I like that. I think teaching will continue some of the things I love the most about this place. Of course the best thing is meeting these amazing young women who cross into your world for a bit and then explode out of here, full of promise and excitement. And for those few that really become a friend or someone who sits in your office and unloads, hoping for a kind thought or an encouraging word... those are the ones you keep. You think about them and if their plans are unfurling as they'd hoped, as you hoped along with them. Its amazing to me when I remember that they are so young, only 19, 20 or 21. On the one hand they have it all set up, have the world at their feet and in a split second they're just someone's daughter... totally terrified at the thought that they have the world at their feet.
