We Won't Back Down

California's Proposition H8te stands. For those who may not know, Proposition 8 was passed in California by 52% of the vote. It was passed using fear tactics this country hadn't seen since Bush decided to invade Iraq. Like those never-found weapons of mass destruction... the baseless fears used to defeat marriage equality were complete lies and fabrications. Millions and millions of dollars were spent by the Mormon church (polygamy good, gay marriage bad?) to make sure that they had a deciding factor on what defines love and who should be allowed to marry and who should not.

It is completely out of my realm of understanding. It is patently horrifying that we live in a country who prides itself on LIBERTY on PERSONAL FREEDOM would deny basic human rights to its citizens based upon their sexuality. It almost seems fake.

What are they afraid of? Are their marriages so rocky and so insecure that the idea of a marriage between two men or two women threatens the future of their marriage?? And if so, then that speaks volumes about the quality of heterosexual marriages and the incredible strength found in gay relationships. If a couple is together for decades without all the rights and benefits of a legal union, if two people choose every single day to stay together because they WANT to... I guess that is pretty sobering to a married couple who stays in it because they can't afford an attorney. Or my favorite, "for the children."

Its about love. It has nothing to do with anyone else. You don't have to even agree with it. But at some point, can we decide to wash our hands of feeling like we have a say in other peoples' lives? Of other lifestyles? Can't we at some point take a good, long look in the heterosexual mirror and fix what WE have broken? Folks... we're pretty bad at staying married!!! We just screw it up more than we get it right. We have no moral claim here.

And so... today... wouldn't it be great if the straight crowd took a look outside of themselves and saw the injustice and demanded better for our fellow Americans??
