Mulligan

Mulligan. He died Saturday morning. He took his final breaths in my arms. There just are no words to try to explain the coolness of this cat. He feared nothing. Every person who met him instantly fell in love. I can't believe he's gone, he was just so fricking awesome.

Every night when Aaron gets home from work I am usually in bed reading, knitting, watching a movie... whatever. In the bed with me is Clancy, Clara, Mulligan and occasionally Stella and Alice. Its like my own little arc. Aaron comes in and Clancy goes berzerker with his Chewbacca routine and happy-butt-dance. Clara will join in and Aaron takes a good 5 minutes in greeting them. And then it would be Mulligan who Aaron would lie down with and hang out. Mulligan was the kind of cat you could pick up and lay him on his back and rub his belly for a half hour and he would just bask in the loving. Mulligan played fetch. He followed us around the yard and when we went for walks in the woods... he would run with Clancy down the paths or jump from tree to tree the whole time. He was always, always with us.

My daughters don't care for the dogs so much, but Mulligan and Alice? Love. Total love.

As I held Mulligan in his final moments I put my head right near his face and whispered to him. I told him to find Patrick at the Bridge and I would see him again. I told him I loved him, that we all loved him and I thanked him for spending time with us. For being our friend. And with that, he just stopped breathing. I carried him into the room where Aaron was sleeping and just cried and cried and cried. We wrapped him in a blanket and buried him in our yard. I asked Patrick to meet him and cross the Bridge with him. Somewhere out there... Patrick has a menagerie of past loved pets with him. Klyde, Tis-gris, Nacho, Hannah and now Mulligan. Pat loved Mulligan. Every time he came over he would spend the night with him in his lap saying several times, "This cat is so fricking cool, Jenn. Look at him! He's so chill."

Until we meet again.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
